My favorite Shanghai Pan Fried Bao!!!!!!

Photo of Kang Kang Food Court - Monterey Park, CA, United States. Amazing Shanghai Pork Buns, $7.95 with tax!

Happy Monday Everyone!

I wanted to share with you this place for good breakfast suggestions or lunch can do as well.

Kang Kang is known for their fried buns due to its crispy skin on the bottom and juicy soup that comes out once you take your 1st bite. The meat is super tender and yum. It’s really a must try when you come.

Photo of Kang Kang Food Court - Monterey Park, CA, United States. XLB is so good here, one already gone before my quick photo snap...

This is the “Xiao Long Bao” that you can order. It has lots of soup inside which is good but I would say that the outer dough can be thinner. Overall, this is an average dish, not my favorite…had better elsewhere.

Photo of Kang Kang Food Court - Monterey Park, CA, United States

while you go up to the counter, you can see all these precooked entrees to choose from. Don’t shy away from it and do try them because it is super flavorful! The servers are generally pretty nice to let you try something if you want (just don’t do it when there are lots of people in line since they can get busy). I would recommend coming with friend and family since they do serve big portions and you may want to try a variety of dishes.

Photo of Kang Kang Food Court - Alhambra, CA, United States

  • note this is one serving with free porridge or rice of your choice
  • the platter is filled to the point that the lid can not close! haha
  • super savory flavor but not too salty
  • dishes are not too dry

Photo of Kang Kang Food Court - Alhambra, CA, United States

This is one of my favorite bowl of Taiwanese noodle soup they call it “Mein xian” in Chinese.

  • Its like a soup with lots of condiments inside
  • add pepper for a kick of taste
  • little oysters are in this dish
  • the noodle is minimal and its very soft so it would be easy for kids to eat; not hard to chew at all
  • I personally like to put some vinegar inside which makes the soup become another amazing taste. Try it yourself!

The interior is nothing to rave about but if you don’t mind the local feeling of the restaurant with just simple chairs and tables…you need to give this place a try. Whenever I am down at South California (SoCal), its like a must go. Since I usually drive to SoCal and arrive early in the day, this is a good place to go since it opens at 6am. Most restaurants opens much later.

I saw this place got remodel and it used to be called “Sage Cafe”. The decor looks like it has been polished with new paint and some cute tables. I’m sad to say that this place didn’t live up to the hype that I expected. I wished I could give this place a higher recommendation but sadly the food was a bit disappointing.

Here is what I ordered

the “spicy shrimp sauce” noodle

WhatsApp Image 2018-02-20 at 1.27.04 PM.jpeg

  • The broth was just salty
  • The spicy sauce shrimp wasn’t really that spicy
  • The noodle was just hard
  • Broth came out lukewarm; kind of wanted it to be a good piping hot bowl of noodle soup
  • On the good side, the shrimp was pretty good
  • This bowl cost $15 + tax + tips = around $20 USD, so I would want it to taste a little better
  • I can still feel the salty msg in my mouth as I’m writing this review 😦

Even though the noodle really didn’t make it for me, I did see some people enjoying coffee and toast which looks way more astounding than the Chinese menu. Maybe I can go there again just for the tea + pastry menu and let you guys know if it is better.

I did have to say their decor is really cute and I like how it is more of a hang out place for coffee with friends to catch up on life or what not.

WhatsApp Image 2018-02-20 at 1.27.07 PM.jpeg

I know overall food around SF Hayes Valley is generally pricey but for a bowl of $20 noodle, I would at least make sure it taste well!

If your here just for the coffee and toast, then you should be fine (i’m guessing by just looking at the people next to me eating, I’ll try myself and let you know again)

Somboon Seafood (Bangkok)@FOODiNG’s

Somboon Seafood

Location:

Phraram 1 Rd | 4F Siam Square One, PattumwanBangkok 10330, Thailand

Attire: Casual

Price: $$ (Its’ probably on the pricier side for Thailand restaurants as they are in nicer mall locations and have air conditioning while you WAIT OUTSIDE AND EAT INSIDE!! )

Service: boy they are nice and tentative! (oh yea, water is consider a “charge”, they don’t serve tap water-which is kind of annoying…..)

Oh Boy! Don’t even get me started. I really heart travelling and Bangkok definitely is high on my list. This restaurant is one of the popular places that people tend to go to. They are really famous for their curry crab which is delicious with rice (trust my little girls can eat a good full bowl of rice just with the sauce).

curry crab.png

I usually get 2 orders; one non spicy for the kids and spicy for me. The original flavor of the crab sauce is super good with rice and the kickin’ spicy sauce makes you feel like your on crack wanting more every time you put the spoonful into your mouth.

Click here for a peak of their menu + location (for those who may want to put this on your check list) They have a few locations in Bangkok, so you can google and find which one is closest for you.

You know that Thailand can be quite HOT, any time of the month you go. So, it is nice to divulge a good meal in a restaurant with air conditioning!

Let’s go ahead and look at the rest of the dishes that I’ve ordered:

Appetizer: fried wrappers with mince meat, seafood paste and some chewy thing i’m guessing chestnuts? WhatsApp Image 2018-02-15 at 12.42.41 PM.jpeg

  • Super yum when it comes out piping hot! Love biting into a crunchy crispy layer with awesome fish paste inside.
  • the paste inside is not too floury and doughy
  • you can taste that they don’t cheap skate on the ingredients
  • the sauce gives it another spice to the palate (sweet and sour) WhatsApp Image 2018-02-15 at 12.42.41 PM (1).jpeg
  • They tell me this is a popular veggy for them, but I personally didn’t like it
  • Its very hard to chew on
  • the sauce was good perhaps if it was with some other type of vegetable
  • I wouldn’t recommend this if you are not familiar with the vegetable. Let’s just stick to the regulars for the next time
  • the vegetable seem like it was old and grumpy. When we try to chew on it, it just tasted like old gum

WhatsApp Image 2018-02-15 at 12.42.41 PM (2).jpeg

  • lots of collagen for those mama and babies good skin!
  • lots of condiments inside
  • great if you add some pepper in it
  • portion is not very big, but for a family of 4, you would get around 1 bowl each (small bowl)

That’s it for now! Do go try and let me know what was your experience. I’ll be going to this place again very soon & will update you with more delicious entrees!

Old Town Ramen@ FOODiNG ‘s

Location: 112 S B St

San Mateo CA 94401

Price: $

Attire: Casual

Service: It is a very fast pace restaurant, people are nice but because of how much people eating during the lunch and dinner time, you may need to wave at them a few times to get your water or tea. So don’t expect great service, its a meh~ you’ll have to compromise through their portion size which is definitely much larger compared to other Japanese sushi places.

This place is known for their large portions of sushi rolls and Japanese dishes. I know that this is the same owner as Old Town Sushi which is a couple stores down from Old Town Ramen.

The reason Why I chose to come to this place instead of Old Town Sushi is because of these few facts:

  • It is newer than Old Town Sushi, thus the store inside is cleaner
  • The seating is much more comfortable if you have kids
  • If you have large parties, they have these cute Japanese booths where it gives you some privacy or if you want the kids to not bother others haha!
  • The wait time to get a seat is much better than Old Town Sushi
  • The menu is exactly the same as Old Town Sushi plus an extra Ramen menu
  • Portions are still very big for the price they charge
  • This place isn’t the authentic Japanese style restaurant. It’s more tailored to Westerns I feel, since they have lots of Sushi rolls and creations that authentic Japanese restaurants may not have
  • Nice bento boxes for those who want quick lunches!

This is what I ordered

Chirashi Deluxe

WhatsApp Image 2018-02-13 at 10.14.06 AM.jpeg
  • Its basically a bunch of sashimi with rice on the bottom
  • portion is huge; more than enough for 2 people
  • The fish isn’t the best I had, but the price is good…so don’t expect 100$ taste when you only pay $10
  • Rice was not too cold nor hot

WhatsApp Image 2018-02-13 at 10.16.59 AM.jpeg

you can see that I had to take all that sashimi out to even find the rice on the bottom

Next item
Chicken teriyaki Entree

  • HUGE portion again
  • chicken not too dry, its pretty tender
  • portion was enough for the 4 of us (even though its one entree)
  • not too overly sweet with the teriyaki sauce

Sushi Role:

WhatsApp Image 2018-02-13 at 10.17.00 AM.jpeg

  • If you like creative sushi rolls, they have a lot to choose from
  • the hint of spicy mayo on top makes it yumm
  • lots of imitation crab meat inside

Overall, this place is good if your not looking for a picky fancy Japanese restaurant. This would lean more towards Western Japanese food. I didn’t try their Ramen just yet, but will be coming back to review! Thanks for taking the time to read my blog. Please follow and like my page! http://www.KitCatb.com

Happy Monday everyone!

Monday is the beginning of the week and we need to start working again. I want to introduce to you all a little Korean cafe that’s a nice area with free wifi for those who need to get out of the house to do some work or to just chill at a relaxing environment to recoup and think what is your next few tasks for the rest of the week.

WhatsApp Image 2018-02-12 at 12.49.15 PM.jpeg

To start of the week, I got something sweet so I feel happy and sweet for the rest of the week. I got the caramel cinnamon Honey Bread with Lavender Vanilla Latte. You can opt for their selection of cake which looks absolutely delicious or grab a savory sandwich.

Drink: Lavender Vanilla Latte

  • Not too sweet compare to other places that make this drink
  • It still contains that coffee taste which is awesome because I don’t like how some place just sugar coat it with syrup and minimum coffee
  • Cute cup with captions; they don’t serve it in a typical cup or bowl like other places. They have their custom cups which is pretty nice. Mine said, “Wake Up! you may be dreaming while you’re asleep, but that dream might come true when you’re awake.”WhatsApp Image 2018-02-12 at 12.49.32 PM (3)WhatsApp Image 2018-02-12 at 1.16.22 PM.jpeg

Main dish: Caramel Cinnamon Honey Bread

  • Not too overly sweet
  • Toast comes out warm
  • Toast is thick, soft inside and crunchy outside
  • It’s simple and not overly crowed with flavorsWhatsApp Image 2018-02-12 at 12.49.32 PM (1)
  • look at the thickness of the toast + it is still soft and warm inside WhatsApp Image 2018-02-12 at 12.53.06 PM.jpeg

Overall, this is a good location to sit and relax. With free wifi, you can browse around or get some work done. The decor of the cafe is very settle and warm which makes it a soothing place to sit. Plus, they have charging outlets which is always good for those who plan to sit for a while! haha.

I can’t wait to come back and try their savory selections and variety of cakes. I’ll be back for more and will be updating you all.

Let me know what type of food you like to eat, what type of restaurants you want me to try and review. I’ll love to hear from you guys and thank you for reading my post. I’ll continue to explore more places and let you know what I think.  If you tried this place before, let me know what was your experience! Please like and follow my page! I really appreciate your support.  http://www.KitCatB.com

There’s many many local bakeries in Hayes Valley and San Francisco but why do I choose to introduce to you guys about this bakery? First, it is good locally baked goods and made fresh on a daily basis! Second, they help “make lives better”. What does that mean?? Well, I did some research on this bakery and found that this is a non profit organization that hires homeless or at risk adults; providing them with the training to employment. I’m all for doing good deeds and buying for a cause. Knowing that this bakery has such a powerful implementation behind its food definitely drawn me more into purchasing here. The location is right across from the new condominium buildings and johnny donuts.

I go to this bakery very often because it has a good amount of seating area for people to sit and people watch (They have big clear windows for you to look out). This isn’t really on the popular side of Hayes Valley but a good area to rest and recap for the day.  There is probably more bakery around the city that has more specialties but this is a good local entity that I would recommend you trying. Knowing that everytime you are purchasing here, you are also helping someone who is homeless, doing your fair share of loving the community doesn’t hurt right? Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Photo of Hayes Valley Bakeworks - San Francisco, CA, United States

The inside is very modern and clean with self serve items and a full barista bar of coffee choices that are brewed from Intelligentsia.

This is what I got today: Ham & Cheese Herb Roll

Yummy & fluffy

  • Yummy & fluffy
  • they can toast it up for you if you like
  • crossiant bread smells really good
  • couldn’t really taste the cheese, I would actully prefer having it more cheesy. But it is good for morning breakfast if you don’t want to feel too fat
  • Bread is not dry which is a good thing
  • You know it is baked fresh!

Earl Grey Cake

Photo of Hayes Valley Bakeworks - San Francisco, CA, United States. Earl grey strawberry cake

  • super soft texture
  • the hint of earl grey makes the cake aroma very nice
  • not overly sweet which is definitely what I prefer
  • you can test a piece and if you like, they have bigger loaves you can buy home for your kids to enjoy together! woohoo! win-win for all.

Here is a sample menu of what they have: BAKEWORKSmenu_0815 for those who are interested in other items.

Service: Nice friendly servers, they brought out the water and menu once I sat down. Gave me a good amount of time to look at the menu. My dish came out super quick too!

I’ve recently tried this place for lunch seeing that there wasn’t really much people waiting in line; since I was in a hurry, I didn’t want to go to places with long lines. I wasn’t really expecting much because most and many times, places with no lines has its reasons.

I looked at the menu and saw it was a super colorful menu with lots of graphics which is good in my opinion for the next time I come with the kids so they can pick and choose what they see yummy.  I ordered the cheesy omelette rice with beef for my entree and a 3 combo appetizer which is composed of fried squid, fries and popcorn chicken.

Photo of Super Pan - San Francisco, CA, United States

The menu itself is quite abundant. I can see this place as a good hang out area as well since they have a boba menu for drinks (Can do to-go as well). I’ve saw other people ordering drinks and it was a super big cup. Not sure about the taste, but I will be coming back to try for sure!

They have desserts too!

Photo of Super Pan - San Francisco, CA, United States

Entree: Cheesy omelette with beef

WhatsApp Image 2018-02-09 at 10.21.40 AM

  • The portion is quite large and filling due to the cheese
  • The plate comes out pipping hot which is what I like (You may want to be careful with little kids).
  • You kind of need the stone to be hot in order for your meat to cook. It comes out raw.
  • I like the taste but I don’t like how this dish will make me stink when I go out (you may not want to come on a day you have an important meeting or date! haha)
  • They give you a variety of sauce choices so there is something for everyone
  • I like how they don’t put the sauce in for you so that you can adjust according to your own taste

Appetizer: 3 item combo; consist of squid, chicken and fries

WhatsApp Image 2018-02-09 at 10.21.40 AM (1)

  • Fair portion and good to share with others
  • Sauce was just regular ketcup and sweet & sour sauce from large bottles, nothing really to rave about
  • Fried items weren’t overly cooked or fried. You know how some places fry it too long and it becomes hard to chew? Good, they don’t do that at Super Pan
  • Fries were good, specially with garlic and cheese
  • Popcorn chicken was good but nothing to rave about as well

I wouldn’t say that this appetizer dish is a must get because it was good but not great. It is a simple plate that I may get to have something to munch on before your entree comes out.

Japanese Omelette Rice @FOODiNG’s

Hi everyone!

It’s Christina here again. First and foremost, this isn’t the traditional Japanese omelette rice recipe. This is FoodiNG’s Kitchen style where I call it, “look at your fridge and improvise style.”

This recipe only took me 15 minutes to pull everything out and cook.

Ingredients:

  • Half Cucumber
  • Japanese beef sauce from the packages (there are many brands available, this was the one I had at home)
  • Frozen sausage patty (you can use any type of meat, beef patty works well too!)
  • 2 eggs
  • Rice
  • Any type of fish ball you have at home, we used the fish ball with roe filling (Optional)
  • Corn Starch
  • Bonito flakes (Optional)
  • Roasted sesame seed (Optional)

Step 1: Prepping the ingredients

There isn’t much to prep at all for this recipe. You cut the cucumbers into slices and put the sausage patty in the microwave for 30 seconds (if it is frozen). while the patty is heating, you have scramble the eggs in another bowl to prep for next step.

Step 2: Making the “egg blanket” which goes on top of the rice

With the scrambled eggs, you put it in a pan that is heated on low so that it will not burn. Have it on the stove while you fry the sausage in another pan. Note: I don’t put any oil when I fry the sausage patty because it is already really greasy and you don’t need any more fat. When you fry it, you will slowly see the oil leak out.

WhatsApp Image 2018-02-08 at 9.32.12 AM

WhatsApp Image 2018-02-08 at 9.42.18 AM (1)

Step 3: Making the yummy sauce

Depending on how heavy you want the sauce to be, you will plan accordingly to your taste. For our family, we used half of a pack. Each packet has 8 cubes and we used 4 cubes. We then put 2 cups of water to boil with the cubes. If you want it to be more creamy, you can use milk instead of water.

you can see its water boiling and blending itself to create this sauce. I put in the fish ball at the same time so it can cook along with the sauce. When the water is hot, I put some corn starch (about half to 1 tablespoon) to create the thickness in the sauce.

Step 4: Compiling it all together

Now is just about stacking everything together. I used a boil to mold the shape you want to create with the rice. Then you stack the meat on top of the rice. Cover it with the egg blanket and place the cucumbers on top. At last, you pour as much sauce you like. Sprinkle it with some roasted sesame seeds + bonito flake. READY TO EAT 🙂

FINAL PRODUCTION!

Noodles & Potstickers @ FOODiNG’s

It is ideal to have freshly cooked meals on a daily basis but I have to admit that I’m not a perfect mom in this imperfect world. I want to share with you what I sometimes tend to whip out from my fridge to prep a quick dinner for the kids and hubby.

*yes, I know it is not the healthiest food in the world to cook for the family… Honestly speaking, who really do have time to cook a gourmet meal every single day? Not me. Just let my imperfection be.*

Here we go.

I want to share with you the 2 items that I frequently have in stock at home.

Item 1: Instant noodles

WhatsApp Image 2018-02-07 at 11.02.07 AM

I don’t put all the sauce in as there is too much msg,  but do what you feel is appropriate for your family. This quick noodle provides a good dinner or quick snack.

I personally like to boil what ever vegetable I have at home and throw in a few pieces of my homemade FOODiNG meatballs to call it a complete FOODiNG’s noodles.

WhatsApp Image 2018-02-07 at 11.02.09 AM (3)

Item 2: potsticker

I usually get them at costco  since I do buy in bulk during my MUST BUY COSTCO run. I buy the Bibigo Organic Potsticker Vegetable since I like to pan fry it for my kids.  It’s super delicious and not overly dry like some other brands I’ve tried.

Noodles and potstickers are a great combo!

WhatsApp Image 2018-02-07 at 11.02.08 AM (1)

I usually put the potstickers inside the pan with some water and NO OIL to boil until the water evaporates. This helps the potstickers to fully cook before we pan fry with oil (it is already cooked when we bought it, but we take it out from the freezer so the boiling water helps defrost it).  Once you put the oil in, you will turn the fire to low heat until you see the bottom is crispy golden brown.

Note: you don’t want to put oil in the beginning because it will make the bottom burnt and not tasty at all.

Here is my final product: Crunchy on the bottom and soft on top! WhatsApp Image 2018-02-07 at 11.02.09 AM (2)

Enjoy!

Tell me what you think of this meal. Do you have any go-to meals that you make for your family? Give me some recommendations as my kids get bored of what they eat when I repeat too much. Mama Ng needs new varieties on a daily basis. I’m super open to conversations and willing to collaborate! Send me a direct message if you like.
